# Document design

> Choose how your invoices look — a predefined template, or the layout, accent colour, density, paper size and optional blocks one by one, beside a live PDF preview.

The **Design** tab of **Integrations → Sales documents** decides how your documents look.
Start from a predefined template, or set each control yourself. Everything is shown against
a live preview of the real PDF.

## Start from a template

One click sets the layout, colour, spacing and which blocks print. Adjust anything
afterwards.

| Template        | What it looks like                                                                |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Classic**     | The default. Your name top-left, a boxed bill-to, a grey table header             |
| **Bold header** | A colour band across the top carries your name and the title                      |
| **Quiet**       | No fills, hairline rules and plenty of air. For studios, consultants and clinics  |
| **Ledger**      | A fully ruled grid that stays legible with forty lines. For shops and wholesalers |
| **Letterhead**  | Your name centred at the top like printed stationery, with the bill under a rule  |
| **Warm**        | The colour band in amber, comfortable spacing, and no view-online line            |
| **Fresh**       | Minimal with an emerald title, for a service business that wants a little colour  |

## The controls

### Layout

| Layout          | Description                                                                   |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Classic**     | Name top-left, boxed bill-to, grey table header                               |
| **Colour band** | A band carries the name and title; the table header and Total row wear it too |
| **Minimal**     | No fills, hairline rules, the title in your accent colour                     |
| **Ledger**      | Every cell ruled, boxed totals — built for long documents                     |
| **Letterhead**  | Name and address centred over a rule                                          |

### Accent colour

Eight presets — Ink, Indigo, Navy, Emerald, Teal, Crimson, Amber, Plum — or any colour you
enter as a six-digit hex value. It colours the title, the band on a colour-band layout, the
table header and the Total row. Text sitting on it flips to black or white automatically so
it stays readable.

### Spacing

**Compact**, **Comfortable** (the default) or **Spacious**. Type size, cell padding, gaps
and margins all move together.

### Paper

**A4** or **US Letter**.

### On the document

Courtesy blocks you may switch off. All are on by default.

| **Logo**             | Your workspace logo, when one is uploaded                            |
| **Amount in words**  | "Rupees five hundred only" under the totals                          |
| **Bank details**     | Only ever printed while something is still owed                      |
| **Notes**            | The notes block, when a document has notes                           |
| **Terms**            | The terms block, when a document has terms                           |
| **Footer line**      | The footer sentence from Settings. Page numbers always print         |
| **PAID stamp**       | On a settled invoice. Never on a receipt — its title already says so |
| **View-online link** | The small link to the web copy at the bottom                         |

<Warning>
  Design changes how a document **looks**, never what it **says**. No option renames the
  title, drops the HSN column on a GST invoice, hides the note that says a document is not a
  tax invoice, or removes the page numbers.

## The preview

The panel on the right is the **real PDF**, rendered by the same code that renders a real
document — a sample invoice built on your own business name, GSTIN, bank details, footer and
logo. It re-renders as you change things and consumes no invoice number. Use **Preview as**
to see a different [document type](/integrations/sales-documents). On a phone that will not
show a PDF inline, an **Open** button does it instead.

## Design is frozen when a document is issued

<Warning>
  The appearance is copied onto each document as it is issued, exactly as the company
  details are. Changing your accent colour tomorrow redraws nothing you sent today —
  re-opening an old document always reproduces what the customer holds.

Documents issued before the Design tab existed carry no appearance and render exactly as
they always did.

## The logo

The logo is your workspace logo, uploaded in [Settings](/settings/overview). It must be a
PNG or JPEG. If it cannot be fetched the document is still produced, without it.
