# Keyboard shortcuts

> Every Inbox shortcut — moving between conversations, resolving, searching, and writing replies and notes without the mouse.

The Inbox can be worked almost entirely from the keyboard. The same list is in the product: open the **⋯** menu in a conversation's header and choose **Keyboard shortcuts**.

On a Mac, use <kbd>⌥ Option</kbd> for <kbd>Alt</kbd> and <kbd>⌘ Command</kbd> for <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>.

## Conversations

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>↓</kbd> | Next conversation |
| <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>↑</kbd> | Previous conversation |
| <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>R</kbd> | Resolve the open conversation, or reopen it if it is already resolved |
| <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>F</kbd> | Search this conversation |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Close the search, or cancel the message you are replying to |

<kbd>Alt</kbd> + arrow walks the list in the order it is shown, with your current view and filters applied, and works even while you are typing — the moment you send is usually the moment you want the next conversation.

## Writing

| Keys | What it does |

| <kbd>Enter</kbd> | Send the reply, or save the note |
| <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> | New line |
| <kbd>/</kbd> | Open saved replies (at the start of an empty box) |
| <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>N</kbd> | Switch between **Reply** and **Private note** |
| <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>B</kbd> | Bold |
| <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>I</kbd> | Italic |
| <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>X</kbd> | Strikethrough |

The formatting shortcuts work in WhatsApp replies and in private notes. Instagram and website replies have no formatting, so there they do nothing. See [Sending messages](/inbox/sending#formatting).

## Inside a menu or search

| Where | Keys |

| Saved replies menu | <kbd>↑</kbd> / <kbd>↓</kbd> to move, <kbd>Enter</kbd> to insert, <kbd>Esc</kbd> to close |
| Conversation search | <kbd>Enter</kbd> for the next older match, <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> for the next newer one, <kbd>Esc</kbd> to close |
| Contact panel notes box | <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> to save the note |

## With the mouse

A few shortcuts combine a key with a click in the conversation list:

* <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>-click (<kbd>⌘</kbd>-click on a Mac) a row to start selecting conversations.
* <kbd>Shift</kbd>-click to select every row between your last click and this one.

  Shortcuts that change something — resolving, switching to a note — are not available to members with the Viewer role.
